Bannister Painting Acquired by The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond, Virgina: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has acquired a painting by Edward Mitchell Bannister.

"Moonlight Marine," 1885, is an oil on canvas, 22 by 30 inches.  This seascape, with a moonlit sky over pounding waves,   joins  over twenty thousand works of art from many world cultures featured at the Museum. 

 

 


Dr. Jane Lancaster to speak about Christiana Bannister 12-11-09

Dr. Jane Lancaster, award-winning author,  will speak about Christiana Bannister, wife of Art Club co-founder Edward Mitchell Bannister.

"Christiana Bannister: The Power Behind the Paintbrush"  is an illustrated lecture by Dr. Lancaster, presenting her research into the busy life and sad death of this extraordinary woman.  Mrs. Bannister, born in Rhode Island, was  a great supporter of the arts, and of her husband's career.   She ran a successful business and was an important fundraiser and philanthropist within the African American community.

The Edward Bannister painting "The Farm Landing" 1892, is listed as one of only five paintings by African- American artists in the White House 450 piece permanent art collection. This Bannister oil landscape was purchased with donations in 2006.

 

The other four paintings: President Clinton family official portraits by Simmie Knox; “The Builders” by Jacob Lawrence; and “Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City” by Henry Ossawa Tanner.

 

The Wall Street Journal article continues with a review of White House Art, descriptions of the paintings on loan, and President Obama's long history of support for the arts. The President has included $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts, in his economic stimulus package.

Edward Bannister Painting Authenticated for Skinners Spring 2009 Painting Sale

Skinners Auctioneers and Appraisers, Boston MA, features a newly discovered painting from the New England painter, Edward Mitchell Bannister, (1828-1901). The painting, depicting a young woman at work making hay, called: "Headed Home from Haymaking" has been authenticated by Anne Louise Avery, leading expert in the life and work of Bannister.

Ms. Avery is currently the lead scholar-consultant for the feature documentary film : "Edward M. Bannister: An American Artist". The film, by Diane Heller, uses archival material and paintings as well as re-enacted scenes to tell Bannister's life story, from his contribution to the Abolitionist Movement to his successful career as a fine artist.
